Topic of the seminar are the experimental and
instrumental break-throughs in particle physics for
which a Noble Price has been awarded. A complete
list of Noble Prices awarded for achievements in
particle physics can be found
here .
For the seminar we propose the following list of
most recent topics (some theoretical topics
less suited for a seminar talk have been omitted):
The theoretical discovery of a mechanism to
describe the origin of mass and the discovery of
the related fundamental particle (2013), UU
The discovery of the broken symmetry which
predicts the existence of at least three families
of quarks in nature (2008), UU
The discovery of asymptotic freedom in the
theory of strong interaction and the running of the
strong coupling constant (2004), JS
Discovery of the tau lepton (1995), UU
Invention and developement of the multiwire
proportional chamber (1992), JS
Deep inelastic electron nucleon scattering
and the importance for the development of the
quark model (1990), JS
The neutrino beam method and the discovery of
the muon neutrino (1988), UU
Discovery of W and Z bosons (1984, UU)
Discovery of violations of fundamental symmetry
principles in the decay of neutral K-mesons
(1980), UU
Discovery of a heavy elementary particle of a
new kind (charm quark, 1976), JS
Discovery of a large number of resonances made
possible through the development of the hydrogen
bubble chamber (1968), JS
